A little about the island
What/Where is Santorini?
Although many people know this island by the name “Santorini” the island’s official name is Thira. Santorini is in the country Greece which is in the south eastern part of Europe. This island is visited by thousands of people every year. It is also known for having the most luxurious hotels in the world.
Are the locals nice People?
From the moment we arrived in Santorini, Greece I knew it was going to be an amazing trip. The people were so welcoming and they almost all knew English!!! This was big for me. Prior to Greece we were in Venice and I found it very hard trying to communicate. It was very frustrating so this so very relieving to me. It turns out Greece teaches English as their second language!
There are three common options for transportation on the island. That would be renting an ATV, renting a car, or riding the bus. We knew that we wanted to explore and make frequent stops so the bus was out of the question for us. We found out that that ATV’s were very common to use as a tourist but we wanted to also ensure our safety as we didn’t know what it would be like driving in a new country with plenty of drop offs and narrow roads. We ended up renting a car and surprisingly it wasn’t too pricy at all. For the very basic model it was only about 50 euro’s per day. This was a no brainer for us. We don’t regret our choice to rent a car at all and highly suggest it to other travelers visiting the island.
Best time of the year to visit
Like most touristy places, the island is exceptionally busy between the months July and August. We took our trip in July due to our schedule for school. We definitely noticed the tourist masses. We ended up learning the best time to visit Santorini was September or early October. The ocean water is also still warm from the summer heat. Plus most of the tourists will already have made their visit.
Always save the best for last! Greece was our last country to visit as we made our way around Europe. It was also the most memorable. Even our flight there was amazing! That is clearly saying something because no one enjoys being on a plane for long periods of time. Our views we saw heading to Greece were indescribable. Some of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen.
As soon as we arrived in the Santorini (Thira) National Airport I knew we were in for an experience of a lifetime. Everyone was so welcoming and you could just tell how proud the people were to welcome us to their beautiful island. The airport was very small. It was easily the smallest airport I have ever been in or seen.
We stayed in a hotel called Perivolas. We also spoiled our selves with a beautiful spacious suite and were greeted with a basket of fruit and a bottle of wine. Looking back I know a standard room would have been more than enough as we were never in our room and that’s how it should be when you’re in GREECE! It was an amazing resort and the staff was so friendly and helpful. They completely spoiled and pampered us the whole visit!
The pool was by far my favorite thing about the hotel! What’s a vacation in Santorini without an infinity pool pic? The view from the pool was prettier than any post card that ever existed.
As strange as it may sound, you can’t leave without trying the Kissing Fish spa! During this pedicure the fish eat all the dead skin off your toes, feet and ankles! It tickled extremely bad but it was definitely an experience we will never forget!
Swimming in the Mediterranean Sea was also an experience I will never forget. The best swimming spot in Santorini and most popular was the Amoudi Bay. From there, was a little island that you could swim to and enjoy some cliff jumping into the beautiful blue water. The waters were so crystal clear that you could see over 100 feet below you.
We didn’t know what to expect food wise when we got to Greece. We thought we would have a hard time trying to find something we enjoyed for how picky of eaters we both are. Thankfully finding good food in Santorini was easier than ever! Everything we had to eat was delicious and very rich in flavor. You could just tell everything was made from great quality and I just loved that.
We will most definitely be making another trip back to Santorini, Greece. Our time there was nowhere near enough. There are plenty of things we look forward to doing on our next trip like visiting the volcano, hot springs, the perivolos beach, Red Beach, and seeing more of the ancient history side of the beautiful island.
